We had choices. When it came time to choose the destination for the first ever W Retreat in the Caribbean, an enviable selection of pristine locations across the Caribbean were available to us. We decided on the small island of Vieques, off the eastern coast of mainland Puerto Rico. Why? Because Vieques is truly special. It’s the way the Caribbean used to be before large-scale development and resort strips dominated the beaches. It’s the Caribbean of fishing villages and coastal towns that don’t feature a single fast food restaurant. It’s exactly where we wanted to be.
The W Retreat in Vieques was designed to honor and complement its surroundings rather than interrupt them. Our resort has been meticulously designed to be in harmony with the wild, lush vegetation of the island. Facing an idyllic, unspoiled stretch of beachfront on the island’s northern coast, the retreat is eight miles from mainland Puerto Rico and worlds away from your typical Caribbean resort.
From the custom-designed furnishings and natural earth tones in your guest room to the fire pits and infinity pool that’s eye-level with the sea, the beauty of this resort is in the details. Your experience with us begins before you reach the retreat. As soon as you land on Vieques, you’ll be ushered to the W airport lounge, where a warm welcome, cool refreshments and a shuttle to the retreat await.
The beautiful and comforting lobby, private beach, outdoor pool, a host of activities and the best spa on the island are reasons enough to linger at our retreat. But we also urge you to take advantage of our on-site car rental service to get out and explore Vieques. The beaches on this island are spectacular and diverse. From the vast glittering crescent of Sun Bay Beach to the long stretch of Red Beach and Blue Beach, you could spend several happy days beach-hopping to your heart’s content. Vieques even has a few “hidden” beaches, one with volcanic black sand and the other with a secluded cave that can only be accessed at low tide. Ask our insiders to point them out on the maps available in the lobby.
If you think the beaches of Vieques are beautiful, wait until you dip beneath the waves. Coral reefs and marine life form a dazzling and colorful tapestry just off shore, and sea turtles are a common sight. Black Beard Sports, the island’s most complete sports outfitter, has an outlet on our premises, and offers snorkeling, diving and fishing excursions. (Snorkeling gear and kayaks are complimentary for our guests.)
Even if you’re here for just one night, don’t miss Vieques’ most spectacular attraction: the biobay. The most brilliant bioluminescent bay in the world, it has attracted hundreds of thousands of travelers to this island.
While you’re on land, enjoy tennis, hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding, or visit the towns of Esperanza and Isabel II to soak in a little Viequense culture. The Fortín Conde Mirasol, a small fort perched on a bluff in Isabel II, is the island’s principal historic site and is home to the Vieques Museum of Art and History.
Whether you’re here to explore, indulge or simply escape to a tropical beach, the W Retreat extends you the warm embrace of the Caribbean… the way it used to be.
Welcome to our Puerto Rico.
