by Starwood Caribbean

Some people go on vacation to relax or to see and learn about new places, and others are always in pursuit of their next big catch. The warm waters surrounding Puerto Rico aren’t just for relaxing; they’re home to some of the best fishing in the world. If you’re passionate about fishing, especially deep sea fishing, then you’ll love to know that the waters off Puerto Rico provide some of the best conditions for big game fishing, from chasing marlin in the deep to amazing bonefish in the flats. Whether you’re a first time angler or a professional, a fishing adventure awaits you in the beautiful waters of the Caribbean.

Marlin Alley

The waters just to the north of Puerto Rico are deep and rich with fish, in fact, if you look at a map you will see that this area is labeled as the Puerto Rican Trench but in the world of deep-sea fishing, it is known as “Marlin Alley”.  In less than 30 minutes you’ll be a few miles from shore in waters that reach a depth of more than 5000 feet. These deep warm waters are home to a variety of fish that includes wahoo, dorado, tuna, sailfish as well as blue and white marlin. There are a number of charter companies that operate out of San Juan and many offer options that range from half a day charters to multiple day charters.

Torrecilla Lagoon and San Jose Lagoon

If you enjoy fishing but are not too convinced about setting out on the open seas, then a lagoon setting is just what you need. Torrecilla Lagoon and San Jose Lagoon are two of Puerto Rico’s best inland fishing spots. Here you can focus on your next big catch while enjoying the beautiful scenery and, best of all, the calm waters mean you don’t have to worry about getting seasick. These two lagoons have the biggest concentration of tarpon in all of Puerto Rico; in fact, they rank among the top places for tarpon fishing in the world. Hire a charter boat and plan a fishing adventure with the family, or set out with an experienced crew to help you catch that next picture-worthy tarpon. You’ll also have the opportunity to catch snook, jacks, barracuda and snapper. There are a number of fishing charters departing from Cangrejos Yacht Club Marina.

Culebra-island

Culebra and Vieques

Located about 17 miles east of mainland Puerto Rico, the small island municipality of Culebra is a great spot for fly fishing. The crystal clear flats are the perfect place to catch bonefish: they come in with the changing tide giving experienced anglers just the right opportunity to catch this elusive fish. Also to the east of mainland Puerto Rico and boasting perfect beaches and serene flats, Vieques welcomes you with fishing conditions that are sure to land you an impressive catch, and maybe even worthy of world records. On the crystalline flats of Vieques, you’re likely to find some of the most prized game fish like bonefish or permit, and you might even spot the unmistakable silver sheen of tarpon.
