A Reservoir History
Elizabeth Avenue & Shirley Street Nassau,

To gain a better appreciation for all things Bahamian, take a few hours to browse through this museum. There's a permanent exhibition here titled "A Reservoir of History." The name sounds a bit bookish, but the exhibit itself is enlightening and enjoyable. There's also a collection of anthropological and archaeological artifacts, all Bahamian of course. Admission costs only US$1 for adults, and children get in for half that. Guided tours are available.

Nassau Public Library & Museum
Shirley Street Between Parliament Street & Bank Lane Nassau,

Built in 1797, this nifty octagonal structure was once the Nassau Gaol (pronounced “jail). Visitors are welcome to take a look at the small cells which now hold only books as their prisoners. Exhibits include relics left by the Arawak Indians, the now extinct indigenous people of the Bahamas. There is also a collection of centuries old prints and colonial documents. Admission is free.

Pirates Of Nassau
Marlborough and George streets Nassau, The Grand Bahama Island

Nassau's rich pirate history is remembered at this popular downtown attraction. It takes up nearly a whole block, just off the main shopping drag. Visitors tour a full-scale pirate ship, a dungeon and a cheerily debauched pirate community. If you wish to make an evening of your tour, buffet dinners or formal entertainment can be arranged. A relaxed patio bar is located just outside the main attraction. The gift shop, an attraction in its own right, can be accessed from the street.

Pompey Museum Of Slavery & Emancipation
Bay Street Nassau,

Two hundred years ago, Vendue House was the site of the local slave auctions. The house now serves as a museum of local history and culture, specifically of slave culture and the history of emancipation in the Bahamas. The museum is located in downtown Nassau, approximately a block from the British Colonial Hotel. It's best to call before making a special trip here as the hours of operation are short and subject to change.
