Shop Pusser's Ltd. for good-quality pants, shorts, shirts, and dresses in conservative styles. Think shirtwaist rather than sarong. Coral Bay
The "Other" Town
Coral Bay is actually just a harbor-front hamlet on the eastern end of the island. The area is home to a coterie of boaters who live in Coral Bay Harbor and a growing number of residents with homes on the hillsides. Coral Bay proper has a school, Emmaus Moravian Church, a couple of restaurants, and a few small shops. More shops and restaurants are strung out sporadically along Route 107 until you run out of road at Salt Pond.

So named because mongooses used to gather at this location, this lovely shopping center is home to two small restaurants and an eclectic collection of stores. Shop owners have scoured the globe to find the nicest and most unusual items for you to buy. Several clothing stores carry attractive resort wear. Spread out over several interconnecting levels, Mongoose Junction Shopping Center makes a nice spot to wander for a few hours. Credit card acceptance varies by store.

Spend an hour or two strolling the flower-draped walkways of this beachfront shopping center. You will find an eclectic collection of stores that carry fine and costume jewelry, spices, casual clothing, and objects d'art. Wharfside is home to Cruz Bay Photo, the only place in St. John to get film developed. Low Key Watersports runs its snorkel and dive operation here. There are also a handful of casual restaurants as well as fine dining at Panini Beach. Hours and credit card acceptance varies by merchant.

Sloop Jones
Oh, The Colors!
It is worth the long trek out to Hansen Bay to visit Sloop Jones. Fabric artist Terry McCoy hand paints ordinary tee-shirts, tank tops, sweaters, dresses, and pillows into wearable works of art. Vibrant colors splash across the fabric, creating items not seen at other hand-painted clothing shops. His clothes are for sale at a few shops in the Virgin Islands, but a visit here lets you watch the artist in action. To find his studio, make the last left-hand turn before the road ends. It is the first house on the right.

Cruz Bay Photo is the only place to get film developed in St. John. This small store offers quality one-hour film developing and well as overnight service. This busy store usually has copies of Herman Wouk's “Don't Stop the Carnival,” the story of a New York adman who bought a Caribbean hotel. It is a must read for anyone interested in the real islands. Starfish Market is the island's largest grocery store. While it is by no means on the scale of United States mainland supermarkets, it will more than fill your shopping needs. Brands are usually what you would find in mainland stores, but the prices are a good 20 percent higher.
